I work hard to play hard. I am super consistent with workouts and nutrition throughout the week. I let loose on the weekend. I enjoy some drinks, some good food, the company of my family and friends.
Because of this cycle, for the longest time I was consistently gaining and losing the same 2 or 3 pounds of water weight. I’d start each Monday with the same weight as last Monday, and work all week just to get back to where I was last Friday. Silly, right? But I enjoyed my quality of life.
However, I’ve found some pretty easy and simple things to do throughout the week that helps me to still enjoy my weekend but NOT sabotage my hard work so much. For real, this stuff is pretty easy and actually good for you!
1) Drink lemon water, apple cider vinegar or both!
This took quite a bit of testing and trying to get to something that I actually could consistently do, because these are some friggin’ strong flavors. I started with warm lemon water and eventually couldn’t resist the constant articles I was reading about apple cider vinegar, so I hopped on that band wagon too!
Both acidic liquids, lemon juice & apple cider vinegar, actually balance your body’s pH level. There are so many awesome benefits to both, but I find that the combo helps me carry less water weight, especially in my tummy. If I feel like a balloon after eating or drinking too much, I always sip a glass of warm water with vinegar before bed. Benefits of lemon water include:
- Immune system boost
- Flushes out unwanted toxins
- Helps aid in weight loss
- Is a natural blood purifier
- Balances your pH level
- Naturally energizes you
- Aids digestion
Benefits of apple cider vinegar include:
- Very rich in enzymes and potassium
- Reduces inflammation
- Helps aid in weight loss by breaking down fat
- Balances pH level
- Helps relieve muscle pain from workouts
- Lowers levels of fatigue
- Aids digestion
- Helps control and prevent candida
It is pretty obvious both of these things can help your body process anything you have introduced in excess. The key is to mix with warm (not cold, not hot) water and to use only unfiltered, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. (Sorry, Heinz. You’re great for other things though!) Raw, unfiltered vinegar is cloudy and contains beneficial enzymes and minerals. Honestly, it is way more smooth than vinegar you are used to.
My ideal concoction for this magical acid juice is 2 cups of water (16 oz), 1/2 fresh lemon, 1 Tblsp of vinegar. If this is still too harsh for you, try adding more water or a drop of honey or agave in the water. I usually just heat my water for 30 seconds in the microwave first, then add all of my goodies. It is also important to drink this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to get max benefits. A lot of folks recommend 2 Tblsp of vinegar daily, so sometimes I will drink again before bed, but I personally can’t handle 2 at once. Geez, now that I typed all that out, it seems like a lot of rules and steps to follow. Haha, once you find your groove though, it really isn’t so bad. I mix mine up first thing and sip on it (through a straw, save your tooth enamel!) while I get ready for work.
2) Take a daily Probiotic
Sooooo, I’m almost 30 years old and just discovered how important gut health is to your whole BODY. Yeah, wish I had learned some of this earlier, but hey, better late than never! So the short version is that our guts are full of healthy bacteria that work on our digestion and keep us healthy and running on all cylinders. Lots of things (like antibiotics or foods we eat) can throw off how many bacteria are in our gut, and even bad bacteria can kind of take over (outnumber the good) and this can cause all kind of issues from slow digestion, to bloating, to acne, to fatigue….all really awesome things, right? Ew, no.
I feel a physical difference in digestions since I’ve started taking probiotics. You can snag them anywhere from drug stores to Costco (heck yes!) to online. Just take them as the directions suggest. I started out with these and like them a lot!
Not into taking a supplement? It’s cool…you can also get some of the benefits from foods you eat! Regularly eating fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut (do people regularly eat sauerkraut!?), some cheeses, kefir and sourdough bread can get you some of the same gut supporting benefits of a probiotic supplement.
This one is kind of a no brainer, but I’m putting it on the list as a reminder for myself too! I try my best to keep up with my water intake during the weekend, but inevitably I fall behind, and replace some with beer? Yikes, double whammy. You will bounce back from weekend indulgences so much faster if your body is hydrated. You’ll feel better in general, avoid any hangover symptoms and if you have awesome willpower, can even manage to eat/drink less by having a glass of water by your side. I take my water with me when I hop in the car or sit down somewhere. If it is near you, you’ll sip on it. Plus, everyone wants to chat with you when you show up with a killer jug like this one!
There you have it, friends. Stay on track, but enjoy the ride, too! Cheers!
